Silky goals, sublime attacking play and creative playmakers: all the sorts of things that attract the media attention and the big headlines.
And at Leicester City this season, it has been no different. Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez have been absolutely sumptuous, firing the Foxes to within grasp of the most unlikely title win ever, while Shinji Okazaki has been a workhorse – chipping in with essential goals – and the ever-present Danny Drinkwater has been superb in the middle of the park. Kasper Schmeichel has been solid between the sticks, as has Christian Fuchs at full-back.
But there are two players that haven’t had quite as much credit as they have deserved. The watertight defence that has been marshalled by Wes Morgan and Robert Huth has been just as vital as the free-flowing play in the other direction. Their jobs haven’t always been classy, yet they’ve been completely irreplaceable and they are simply always guaranteed a starting place.
Who’d have thought, 31-year-old Huth would be in with the chance of winning a Premier League title 10 years after he left Chelsea? He’s revelled in Leicester’s extremely unlikely and surprising challenge and it’s somewhat romantic that he’s set to win the crown with Claudio Ranieri – another man cast aside by the Londoners.
The German had been signed as a youth player by the Italian from Union Berlin back in 2001, and despite being part of two title-winning sides, he was soon displaced by John Terry, and never returned to the starting line-up. Since he left Stamford Bridge he’s had spells at Middlesbrough, Stoke and now Leicester, and with all due respect, very few would have thought he’d be winning the title ever again Huth is the sort of player you want to be around as a colleague. He’s funny (as you can often see on his twitter profile), confident and is an excellent professional on the pitch.
Meanwhile his defensive partner, and club captain, Morgan has had a pretty fantastic season, too. The former Nottingham Forest man has been immovable from the first XI, and his header gave his side a huge win over Southampton recently.
Morgan has previous when it comes to winning games with the Foxes. During the 2014 Championship run they went on a great run, growing in confidence each time until they secured promotion back to the big time – and that experience will be essential this time round as the season comes to an exciting climax.
What’s most important is that the centre-back pairing understand one another through and through. While they’re not the most valuable pairing in the world, or the most glamorous, they’ve got the job done in the best way – by staying out of the limelight and shining week in, week out.
So as Leicester’s season comes to an end, can Huth and Morgan keep shining, and will they be at the club next season?
