Newcastle United’s deal for Miguel Almiron is in doubt due to his ‘astronomical’ wage demands, per the Press Association, via BT Sport. The Atlanta United midfielder has attracted interest from a number of clubs, including West Ham, but it appears that any potential Premier League transfer could now be in doubt.
What’s the word?
The Magpies have long been linked with the Paraguay international, who has been a massive hit in the MLS.
Since linking up with Atlanta, Almiron has scored 21 goals and provided 21 assists across 70 appearances, and has also won 13 caps for his country.
West Ham had also been linked with a potential bid for the 24-year-old, but it now appears that fans may have to wait a little longer to see the attacking midfielder in the Premier League.
The aforementioned report claims that, in addition, to a major transfer fee – reported to be around £25million – the cost of handing Almiron a contract at St James’ Park will total £100,000-per-week.
There will also be an agent fee in addition to that, and that has placed the deal in doubt, particularly given Newcastle’s apparent unwillingness to spend big in the transfer window.
Is Almiron worth it?
In an inflated transfer window, we have seen major deals struck for players.
A number of clubs have spent a lot of money on players that may not be deemed as Premier League quality; Callum Hudson-Odoi, for example, has not played for Chelsea for a consistent period of time, but he is reportedly set to cost Bayern Munich £35m.
Almiron, obviously, has not been tested in a marquee league, but he has been a superb asset to Atlanta in MLS and would offer Newcastle a different dimension.
They have scored just 15 goals this season, only behind rock-bottom Huddersfield who have hit just 13.
Almiron would surely help with that issue, both in his goalscoring ability and his creative skills, and if he helps Newcastle climb the table, it will prove to be money well spent.
