As reported by The Daily Mirror, Roberto Mancini is eyeing a return to the Premier League and is waiting in the wings ready to replace Slaven Bilic at West Ham United.
What’s the story?
After suffering another heavy home defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday, the unease around the fact West Ham have made little progress this season is coming to the fore again.
Now Bilic faces further pressure after The Mirror revealed that an ex-Premier League winning manager is waiting to take his job.
The paper reports that Mancini is keen to return to management in England and even took in that 4-0 drubbing at the hands of City mid-week.
The former Inter Milan and Man City boss may have to bide his time though with a decision on Bilic’s future not expected to be made until the summer when his contract will have just 12 months remaining, according to the report.
Should he stay or…?
It’s no secret that West Ham aren’t enjoying this season as much as last. They were a breath of fresh air last year, taking no prisoners with direct and physical attacking football, not to mention the silky skills of Dimitri Payet.
It’s not that West Ham are even that bad this season, they just haven’t been very consistent. Supporters have found joy in the performances of Michail Antonio, Manuel Lanzini and recently Andy Carroll, but the highs have been peppered through prolonged periods of bad results.
The move to the London Stadium from their traditional home was always going to be a tough one. Some may argue that it has little to do with performances on the pitch but there’s a lot to be said for comfort and supporter harmony.
Bilic deserves another season to show he can take the club forward, swapping him out with big name may create a buzz but is it the right long-term strategy? Stability and incremental progress are the keys to success in football and the West Ham boss should stick around for another year to see if that produces the results everyone at the club desires.
